Adapted from the New York Times bestselling picture books by Deborah Diesen and illustrated by Dan Hanna, The Pout-Pout Fish follows two aquatic misfits on an unlikely journey to save their home. At the heart of the story is Mr. Fish, a gloomy introvert convinced he is destined to spread his “dreary wearies,” and an energetic young sea dragon who refuses to let him stay down. Together they set out on a daunting quest to find a legendary fish, discovering courage, friendship and a brighter outlook along the way.

The film features a star-studded voice cast led by Nick Offerman as Mr. Fish, alongside Nina Oyama, Miranda Otto, Remy Hii, Jordin Sparks and Amy Sedaris. Ricard Cusso directs the adaptation with co-director Rio Harrington, working from a screenplay by Elise Allen, Elie Choufany and Dominic Morris. The 3DCG feature is produced by Australia-based Like a Photon Creative together with MIMO Studios and Macmillan Publishers, with MIMO’s Cyma Zarghami and Madeira Ginley producing.

For Viva Kids, the acquisition reflects a continued commitment to championing globally recognized children’s IP and bringing it to the big screen. The deal was negotiated by Viva Pictures and Sola Media, which has been handling international sales on the title.

First published in 2008, The Pout-Pout Fish has grown from a single picture book into a global franchise spanning more than 40 titles, with over 10 million copies sold worldwide. Praised for its rhyming text, vibrant illustrations and gentle message about perspective and positivity, the series remains a fixture in classrooms and homes, making its theatrical debut a natural next step for the beloved property.
